3D Models, props set as a reference for a book illustrations

3D modeling used for reconstruction references to facilitate the rendering of illustrations for the book.

The only reference delivered for the important illustration was a single scan of a photo printed in some newspaper showing the Jordan Harbour year 1828. This kind of source reference can only be obtained by querying the archives, there is no such material available on the internet.

The reference was not readable enough to enable work on a detailed illustration of the port. I decided to make models of ships and props such as carts, barrels, boxes to facilitate the process of drafting the illustration.

The blueprint of XIX century three mast sail marchant ship was used to create 3D models applied in the set of the port created for the illustration.

Camera projection method

The original picture of the port was fairly accurately reproduced when matching the objects in the scene. The camera projection is used to carefully line up the geometry to match the reference image.

Silhouettes of people, horse-drawn carriages, and carts were added to fill and liven up the setting.

For compositional reasons, various variants of the camera shot have been tried. Below is the final effect of the illustration used in the book and on the cover.
